Refugee Support Devon website project

Refugee Support Devon

One clear place for support, participation and trust

An inclusive charity website designed to help people find practical support, understand services and take part without unnecessary barriers.

The challenge

The website serves audiences with very different needs: people seeking help, volunteers, supporters, partner organisations and members of the wider community. Some visitors may be under pressure, have limited confidence with English or rely on a phone as their main device. The challenge was to prevent important guidance from becoming buried inside organisational language while still giving the charity space to communicate its purpose, news and long-term work.

Our approach

We structured the experience around intent. Support information, ways to help, news and contact routes are separated into recognisable journeys, with important actions surfaced early. Content patterns favour short introductions, descriptive headings and clear links so visitors can scan before committing to a detailed read. The editorial model gives staff a consistent way to publish updates without creating a maze of one-off layouts.

Experience and accessibility

Inclusive design guided typography, spacing, colour and interaction. We protected readable line lengths, keyboard navigation and visible focus states, and kept core information usable without relying on animation or visual cues alone. Responsive behaviour was considered from the smallest screen upward because mobile access can be the difference between finding help and abandoning the search. Plain-language structure also supports translation tools and readers with different levels of digital confidence.

Engineering, performance and maintainability

The build provides reusable page structures for evergreen guidance, campaigns, news and events. Lean templates, optimised media and conservative script loading support fast delivery, while semantic HTML and sensible metadata improve both accessibility and search visibility. Forms and contact routes were designed to collect only useful information and to work reliably across devices. The platform remains maintainable for a small team, with editing controls that encourage consistency rather than demanding technical knowledge.

Our guiding principleA charity website should never make people work hard to understand whether they are in the right place. We designed the route to help before asking the visitor to learn the organisation.
